Northbourne Medical Centre has been an integral part of the community in Shoreham-by-Sea for many years. The practice took pride in the quality of services provided but, in the former premises, several challenges were being faced. When asked about the previous accommodation, Beverley James, a practice administrator for over 15 years explained:

We had a very good community spirit…but the building was very tired and very cramped, we were hot-desking, people were running out of computers to use, there was no room.”

The situation had become unsustainable and the practice needed a long-term solution if they were to continue providing services in the heart of the community. The search began to find a suitable development partner, one who could identify a site and invest the necessary capital to design and build a state-of-the-art Primary Care facility. In 2011, recognising the significant track record of the company, the practice selected GPI as their preferred partner. By March of 2012 a site had been identified and planning permission granted to renovate a building with a long-standing association with healthcare.

The new surgery is set within the grounds of the Southlands Hospital and the existing building, Thakeham House, has been re-furbished, modernised and extended whilst retaining much of its historic Edwardian character. Built in the 1930’s as part of the original Edwardian infirmary (being used for many years as a nurse’s home) the building continues its proud heritage of healthcare, providing 1,200 m2 of modern, flexible and up to date Primary Care accommodation over three floors, including an on-site pharmacy. The practice can now provide an extended range of high quality services to over 10,000 patients. Patients are able to access services that are normally provided in hospital, for example Sussex Dermatology and the Musculoskeletal Service now run outreach clinics. The practice is also delighted to retain community nursing and to expand its counselling team.

The building’s original character has been maintained whilst the interior has been entirely remodelled

The building lies adjacent to the designated Southlands Conservation Authority and has been noted as a property which makes a positive contribution to the townscape. In order to ensure the refurbishment works were carried out with respect for the building’s historic significance, GPI worked closely with Adur District Council and several local interest groups. The end result is truly impressive; the development enables this prestigious building to continue positively contributing to the local health economy.

Commenting on the success of the project, Jill Grey, Practice Manager explains:

“After many years of planning, the tenacity of the practice and the developer GPI, Northbourne Medical Centre has at last seen the completion of its new building. The staff and GPs are absolutely delighted to be working from their wonderful new premises, formerly known as Thakeham House in Shoreham-by-Sea.

It is an absolute honour to be able to practice from a building of significant historical importance to our local area; the totally refurbished building retains all its original character on the outside and is a thoroughly modern general practice on the inside. It is fantastic to be able to provide safe, effective, high quality clinical care to our patients in a spacious new building that we are hopeful in years to come will become a significant part of the local community.”

In order to deliver this important development, GPI agreed terms for the acquisition of the building and surrounding land from Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust, appointed a specialist professional team (including heritage advisors to work alongside the main architect) and invested over £3m to see the transformation of the building into new premises for the practice.

The project director for GPI was Will Sheardown who remarked:

“The success of this project has been testament to the close working relationship between the practice and the development team I think together we’ve created a building that has real personality, both reflecting the history of the original building and the character of the practice who will occupy it.

The practice liked the feel of the existing building and when extending, special attention was paid to retain many original features so as to create a similar feel and really ensure that old and new came together seamlessly. The end result is a prestigious new facility which will enable the delivery of high quality primary and community services and help the practice provide excellent care to their patients for many years to come.”

GPI were also pleased to assist the practice in hosting a formal opening ceremony; an event which was organised with the help of the Patient Participation Group (PPG). Speaking at the event, former senior partner Dr Smith said:

“It is true that the heart of a practice is in the people who work in it as well as the patients who visit it, but there is a need for appropriate space and facilities to allow the best care to be provided all of the time. And here at the new Northbourne Medical Centre we have just that!”

Asked if she felt the ‘New Northbourne’ would make a difference to patients, PPG member Phyll Bovingdon responded: “I’m sure it will…there’s so much more room.”

The project also reached the final shortlist for the national Health Investor ‘Developer of the Year’ award. Completion of the Northbourne Medical Centre is further testament to GPI’s ability to deliver tailor-made solutions incorporating new-build and bespoke refurbishment projects.
